Aaron Michael Shields, known to many as Mike, recently died in a car accident in Chatsworth, causing heartbreak within his close-knit dog-social group and the wider community. Shields, born on January 13, 2002, was remembered for his deep affection for dogs and his aspirations to open his own animal care facility.
Mike's profound love for dogs was evident in his daily life and work. He contributed his warmth to local dog gatherings, where his absence is now deeply felt. He worked at Camp Canine and operated his own pet-sitting business, consistently demonstrating an understanding of dog personalities, earning their trust, and caring for them with training, patience, and genuine affection. Many observed how naturally dogs were drawn to him and how he embraced the responsibility of their care. Mike held a dream of establishing his own dog resort, envisioning a place that would embody the same joy, safety, and compassion he freely offered to animals and their people.
Beyond his dedication to animals, Mike displayed determination from a young age. He began playing football at 8 years old at the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club in the Bronx. He continued his football career at Frederick Douglass Academy and, after moving to Las Vegas in 2018, at Centennial High School, where he graduated in 2020. His journey with football extended into college, first in Arizona and subsequently in Santa Barbara, playing alongside his brother Tyrone. When an injury necessitated his departure from the sport he loved, Mike responded with resilience, channeling his passion into dog care and building a future around it.
This year, Mike graduated from Santa Barbara City College with an associate degree and was actively preparing to enlist in the United States Air Force. Friends from his dog-social group recalled his everyday presence, noting his kindness, protective nature, bright laughter, easy conversations, and the vibrant energy he brought to their gatherings. Whether discussing dogs, sharing future plans, or simply relaxing with friends, Mike played a role in fostering a welcoming, fun, and connected atmosphere within their dog social family.
Above all, Mike's deep love for his family was central to his identity, manifesting in his loyal, protective, and loving nature. He is survived by his mother, Teena; his sister, Alicia; his niece, Alora; his brothers, Carmello and Tyrone; his grandmother, Grandma Glen; his great-grandmother, GG Ivey; his uncles, Rob, Tony, and Danny; his aunt, Tia Maria; his beloved Aunt Hannah; his father, William; and numerous cherished cousins. Community members extend their heartfelt condolences to his family, holding them in their thoughts during this difficult time.
Friends expressed gratitude for the privilege of knowing Mike, noting that while friendships at a dog park may start with shared animals, they deepen through consistency, trust, and shared stories over time. They stated that Mike’s compassion, the dreams he spoke of, and the future he diligently worked to create will be remembered during every future gathering with their dogs. His time with the community was acknowledged as far too short, yet the kindness and memories he left are expected to endure. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered as a beloved member of his community's pack.
