The Santa Barbara Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office, located at 535 Castillo St., is scheduled for a temporary closure to facilitate comprehensive renovations. The California Department of Motor Vehicles announced that the facility will close at 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 23, and is slated to reopen at 8 a.m. on Jan. 15.
The improvements planned for the Santa Barbara location include significant upgrades to its interior and exterior. The DMV specified that the work will encompass the installation of new flooring and carpet, updated furniture, a fresh coat of interior and exterior paint, and enhanced data cables. Additionally, the restrooms within the facility will be upgraded.
During the closure period, customers requiring in-person DMV services are encouraged to visit other area offices. The closest alternative for many Goleta and Santa Barbara residents is the Goleta DMV office, situated at 7127 Hollister Ave., #24. This office is approximately 12 miles from the temporarily closed Santa Barbara facility.
Further options include the Ventura DMV office, located at 4260 Market St. This branch is about 32 miles away from the Santa Barbara office. Another alternative is the Oxnard DMV office, which can be found at 4050 Saviers Road, approximately 40 miles from the Santa Barbara location.
However, before traveling to any DMV office, the agency strongly advises customers to first explore its online services available at dmv.ca.gov. Officials emphasized that “Most DMV tasks do not require an office visit.” The DMV encourages the use of its online platform and other service channels to complete various transactions, such as eligible renewals for driver’s licenses and vehicle registrations, efficiently from home.
Customers can also utilize the Service Advisor tool on the DMV website to identify and understand the various options available for completing their specific DMV tasks. This online resource helps users determine if an office visit is truly necessary or if their needs can be met through digital channels.
Another convenient suggestion from the DMV is to opt for paperless communication. Individuals can sign up to receive paperless vehicle registration and driver’s license renewal notices. This can be done by signing in or creating a secure online account at dmv.ca.gov and then selecting the opt-in option for paperless correspondence.
