Woods Humane Society is waiving adoption fees for all senior pets, defined as those aged 7 years and older, throughout the month of November. This initiative is part of the organization's 'Senior Pets Rock' promotion, which is sponsored by Hill’s Pet Nutrition, as Noozhawk reported.
Emily L’Heureux, CEO of Woods Humane Society, stated that the organization holds a special regard for senior pets, noting their sweet, soulful nature and their deservingness of a comfortable and loving home. L’Heureux expressed gratitude to Hill’s Pet Nutrition for their support in hosting this month-long adoption event, which helps to increase public awareness and "remove barriers to adoption" for older dogs and cats.
Senior pets often arrive at the shelter needing substantial medical attention. Despite receiving treatment, they can be overlooked by potential adopters due to their age. This often leads to senior dogs and cats experiencing lengths of stay at the shelter that are two to three times longer than those of younger animals.
To highlight the value and companionship that older animals can offer, Woods Humane Society emphasizes several key reasons why senior pets make excellent additions to a home.
First, many senior pets have already experienced living in a home environment. They are often house-trained and accustomed to coexisting with humans, which can result in a much smoother transition into a new adoptive household.
Second, their more active and wilder youthful days are typically behind them. Older dogs and cats generally require less intense exercise and stimulation. They tend to be calmer and gentler than younger pets, and often spend their time napping while their human companions are away.
Lastly, senior pets are described as wise and soulful companions. They can offer a notable level of maturity and frequently show immense gratitude for the kindness and companionship they receive from their new families.
Community members interested in viewing the senior pets currently available for adoption can visit Woods Humane Society’s website or visit the facilities in person. Woods Humane Society has two locations: 875 Oklahoma Ave., San Luis Obispo, and 2300 Ramona Road, Atascadero.
