IRVINE, Calif. — The UC Santa Barbara Men’s Soccer team suffered a 1-0 defeat to UC Irvine in a Saturday night contest, a result that means the Gauchos will not secure a top-two finish in The Big West conference. For the first time in three years, the team will have to compete on the road for The Big West Championship if they qualify.
The loss cemented that the Gauchos will not be one of the conference’s top two teams. Consequently, they are set to visit either Utah Valley or UC Irvine in a Big West Semifinal match scheduled for November 7. Moreover, Santa Barbara’s position in the conference tournament is not yet guaranteed. To secure their spot in the conference's postseason play, the Gauchos must achieve at least a draw against CSUN in their final Big West contest next Saturday.
Early in the match against UC Irvine, the Gauchos demonstrated offensive initiative. In the fifth minute, Peleg Brown took a shot from approximately 35 yards out that came close, glancing off the far post. Just one minute later, Donovan Sessoms was denied from close range by a diving stop toward the far post, following a period of strong build-up play. However, the hosts capitalized on their first opportunity, scoring in the 17th minute. After taking the lead, the Anteaters adopted a defensive strategy, with all 11 players positioned behind the ball, which made it challenging for the Gauchos to generate opportunities for an equalizer.
Steinar Bjornsson found enough space to attempt a shot from a relatively favorable position in the 32nd minute, but the effort resulted in an easy save for the UC Irvine goalkeeper. This marked the last significant action of the first 45 minutes, as Santa Barbara struggled to penetrate Irvine's defensive formation. The second half mirrored the first, presenting the Gauchos with opportunities but no breakthrough. As the clock approached the hour mark, both Zac Siebenlist and Peleg Brown had open shots from around 18 yards from goal at the far post, yet neither found the target.
In the 73rd minute, Bjornsson launched one of his characteristic long shots, which only managed to sting the palms of the Irvine goalkeeper. The Gauchos faced a more significant threat in the 74th minute when a defensive giveaway almost led to another goal for UC Irvine, but Owen Beninga made a crucial save, sprawling to his left, to maintain the one-goal difference. Santa Barbara continued their attempts to unlock the Anteater defense after this close call. In the 77th minute, Sessoms turned effectively and darted into space at the top of the 18-yard area, but his shot rolled harmlessly into the goalkeeper’s arms. Calle Mollerberg's extra-long-range attempt in the 83rd minute met the same fate. An earlier missed connection occurred in the 80th minute between Bjornsson and Kaden Standish; Standish had moved into a good position inside the penalty area, and Bjornsson delivered a low cross to his feet, but Standish's timing was off, preventing him from guiding the ball towards the goal.
The Gauchos are scheduled to return to Santa Barbara for their final two matches of the season next week. The first of these will be a home game against California Baptist on Tuesday, October 27. This match was rescheduled from October 21 due to inclement weather. Following that, on Saturday, October 31, Santa Barbara will host CSUN for Senior Night and their regular-season finale. Currently, the Gauchos, CSUN, and Cal State Bakersfield are all vying for the final two available spots in The Big West Championship tournament.
