The City of Goleta has installed temporary protective fencing and sandbags around the historic Goleta Train Depot at 300 N. Los Carneros Road to safeguard the historic site against rain damage, as The Santa Barbara Independent reported. While the historical museum building itself will remain closed temporarily during the rainy season, the overall grounds remain open to the public. Visitors can still access the Visitor Center and take part in train rides at the facility throughout this period.
The municipal installation of sandbags and perimeter fencing is designed specifically to protect and preserve the historic 300 N. Los Carneros Road structure from potential severe weather impacts. Although the physical museum building cannot host visitors inside during the winter rain period, the surrounding operational elements of the site continue to welcome members of the public.
The temporary fencing has required certain adjustments to pedestrian traffic and walkways across the grounds. Despite these modified walkways, visitors are still able to access designated areas within the museum property and participate in the regular outdoor activities that have long established the depot as a favored destination for local families.
Speaking on the temporary changes to the facility, Natasha Casias, a member of the South Coast Railroad Museum Board of Trustees, told The Santa Barbara Independent that while the protective fence alters the property's appearance and access to specific zones, the organization remains committed to receiving visitors and preserving Goleta's rail history. Casias highlighted that as a volunteer-supported non-profit organization, the museum continues its mission to serve the community and deliver memorable experiences to guests of all ages.
The South Coast Railroad Museum maintains its standard operational schedule on weekends during the temporary closure of the primary museum building. The facility welcomes the public on Saturdays and Sundays between 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Train rides remain active during these weekend open hours, with the final train departure scheduled for 3:45 p.m. each day, provided weather permits. Community members seeking additional details about operations and schedules can consult the museum's official website.
Alongside its standard weekend operating hours, the museum is preparing for its 34th annual Candy Cane Train event. The five-weekend holiday tradition is scheduled to run from Saturday, November 28, 2026, through Sunday, December 27, 2026. Organizers plan to release additional event details and specifics about this year's holiday schedule in the near future.
These ongoing winter preparations follow a major milestone for the historic Goleta location. The South Coast Railroad Museum at the Historic Goleta Depot recently celebrated the 45th anniversary of the historic relocation that brought the depot structure from Kellogg Field to its present home at Los Carneros Park. That historic move marked a key moment in preserving Goleta's local transportation history.
For now, the City of Goleta's protective fencing and sandbag placement will remain at the 300 N. Los Carneros Road property to protect the historic structure through the rain season, while weekend train rides and the Visitor Center remain open to serve local residents and visitors.
