The University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) Theater Department is preparing to present Arthur Miller’s acclaimed play, 'All My Sons,' offering performances from November 12-15 at the UCSB Performing Arts Theater, as The Santa Barbara Independent reported. This production dives deep into themes of morality, societal responsibility, and the inherent costs associated with the American dream, all set against the backdrop of a post-World War II suburban environment. Director Sara Rademacher, in comments made to The Santa Barbara Independent, described the play as exploring the "quality of morality within the brutality of capitalism," highlighting its critical examination of justification for success when it comes at another’s sacrifice.

Originally penned and brought to Broadway in 1946-47, 'All My Sons' chronicles the experiences of a family striving to find comfort in a Midwestern suburban setting while simultaneously contending with the profound fallout from the war years. At the heart of the narrative are Joe Keller and his wife, who are both suffering from the tragic loss of one of their sons during the conflict. Complicating their grief, Joe Keller's manufacturing business has been embroiled in a scandal. The business was accused of supplying defective airplane equipment to the military, an allegation that tragically resulted in American fatalities. Rademacher conveyed to The Santa Barbara Independent that the play explicitly questions what responsibility and accountability truly mean within modern society, and critically examines whether these important ideals are even possible to uphold in contemporary life.

The UCSB Theater Department’s staging of this classic American dramatic work employs a distinctly cooperative approach, drawing on the talents of both BFA students and performers from a wide array of other academic majors across the university. According to Rademacher, the core focus of this theatrical project is to enhance and deepen acting technique through an intensive process, utilizing the play’s powerful and sturdy text as a foundation for learning and development. While the performances will take place in the Performing Arts Theater and will incorporate various design elements, the production is unique in that it operates without traditional dedicated designers. Instead, the actors themselves took on the dual roles of designers and members of the production team throughout the entire development and staging process, fostering a highly collaborative and immersive experience.

This presentation by the UCSB Theater Department brings the work of a celebrated American playwright to the local stage, continuing the inspection of the American ethos for contemporary audiences. It invites the Goleta community to engage in an ongoing conversation about the complex nature and potential pitfalls of the American dream, as reflected through Miller's enduring work.
