As The Daily Nexus reported, UC Santa Barbara MultiCultural Center Director Afiya Browne has drafted a proposal for a campus-wide harm response system to address identity-based harm. Browne told the outlet that existing resources are often reactionary and lack consistency when handling racialized incidents, noting a gap compared to the C.A.R.E. program that supports survivors of interpersonal violence.
The proposed system aims to establish a transparent, healing justice-centered process to coordinate responses, support impacted individuals, and work toward institutional repair. Browne recently shared the rough draft with campus offices and student groups, including El Congreso, to gather feedback before discussing the initiative with student affairs administrators. The proposal does not seek to replace existing offices like Title IX or the Ombuds office, but rather to improve coordination and follow-through among them.
