As The Daily Nexus reported, fifth-year communications major Brock Buster completed UC Santa Barbara’s mandatory Sexual Violence and Harassment, Anti-Discrimination, Prevention and Education training on Friday, Oct. 30. Buster had avoided the S.H.A.P.E. training for four years, resulting in a hold on his GOLD account that prevented him from registering for classes and delayed his graduation.
Buster completed the modules after his hedge-fund-manager father threatened to cut him off financially. According to a UCSB spokesperson who spoke in a phone interview, the modules average a completion time of five minutes, but Buster spent twenty-nine hours working through the material. Roommate and economics major Leo St. Grass told The Daily Nexus that Buster meticulously reviewed the entire training.
Following the coursework, Buster told The Daily Nexus that he recognized past behaviors that created hostile environments and vowed to always ask for consent. The Daily Nexus also discovered that Buster had accumulated several unresolved Title IX reports during his time at the university due to confusion regarding the terminology.
