The California Highway Patrol (CHP) Coastal Division is calling on local communities to prepare for a strong El Niño weather pattern expected this winter season. Forecasts predict significant heavy rainfall, potential coastal flooding, and hazardous roadway conditions, prompting the CHP to issue safety guidelines.

Mike Alvarez, chief of the CHP Coastal Division, stated that ensuring the safety of coastal communities is a top priority as severe weather approaches. He emphasized that preparation is crucial, both at home and on the road, noting that storms can rapidly create dangerous driving conditions. The CHP is urging everyone to remain alert and reduce speed to help ensure safe travel for all motorists.

In anticipation of these weather events, the CHP Coastal Division will be actively monitoring highway conditions. This effort will include collaboration with allied local agencies and Caltrans to effectively respond to any weather-related incidents that may occur.

To help maintain safety on the roads during wet weather, the CHP has provided several key driving tips:

Drivers should significantly reduce their speed. Posted speed limits are established for ideal, dry conditions. When roads become wet, slowing down is essential to maintain proper control of the vehicle and prevent accidents.

Motorists must also increase their following distance. Stopping distances dramatically increase on wet pavement, requiring more space between vehicles. Leaving extra room between your vehicle and the one ahead provides crucial time to react and stop safely if necessary.

Before the heavy rains begin, it is important to inspect your vehicle thoroughly. Ensure that your tires have adequate tread depth and are properly inflated. Worn windshield wipers should be replaced, and all vehicle lights must be checked to confirm they are functioning correctly, enhancing visibility for both the driver and others on the road.

California law mandates that drivers turn on their headlights whenever windshield wipers are in continuous use. This practice is vital for both seeing the road clearly and allowing other drivers to see your vehicle, especially in reduced visibility conditions during heavy rain.

Drivers are advised to avoid sudden movements while driving in wet conditions. Both accelerating and braking should be done gently. Abrupt steering or hard braking can cause a vehicle to hydroplane, leading to a loss of contact with the road surface. If hydroplaning does occur, the CHP recommends easing off the accelerator and gently steering the vehicle in the direction you wish it to go.

A critical warning from the CHP is to beware of standing water on roadways. Motorists should never attempt to drive through flooded roads. Even a few inches of flowing water can be powerful enough to sweep a vehicle away. The safety message for encountering flooded roads is clear: “Turn Around, Don't Drown.”

The CHP encourages all motorists to stay informed about changing conditions by monitoring official weather alerts. Additionally, following local CHP X platforms is recommended for real-time traffic updates and information regarding road closures.
