As The Daily Nexus reported, the Isla Vista Community Services District board covered progress on a permanent bluff memorial, Soltopia planning, and car-free living strategies during its Oct. 27 meeting.
The board unanimously approved an agreement to fund ongoing maintenance for the Walter Capps Park memorial bench designed by Carson Brown, commemorating those lost to cliff falls. Assistant General Manager Sydney Castaneda noted that the district launched its Cliff Safety and Education campaign in 2023 following previous tragedies.
Directors also addressed Soltopia 2027 and the Isla Vista Harm Reduction Project, which deploys non-police safety services on weekend nights. Director Annabelle Sipos told The Daily Nexus that UC Santa Barbara has expressed tentative interest in helping organize the event amid funding shortages. Furthermore, the board reviewed potential parking and mobility strategies for new housing developments to encourage car-free living in Isla Vista.
